Year and Subject?
{ Tags: None \ Oct29 }In this year, by a 7 to 2 margin, the Supreme Court finally decided a very vexing question which had troubled the citizens of the United States for many years. In this decision, an entire class of people in the United States were labeled “not legal persons” according to the U.S. Constitution and therefore could receive no protection under that founding document. Those who opposed this decision, were met with the following; “You say it is against your moral, religious, and ethical convictions? Then don’t have one, but don’t impose your morality on me. This is legal!”. What was the year and what was the subject? The year was 1857, and the subject was slavery. In the Dred Scott decision, the highest court in the land said that blacks were the property of the slave owner, to be used, abused, or killed according to his whims. It took the aftermath of a Civil War and the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to legally grant freedom, civil rights, and voting rights to everyone in this country who should possess them.
On January 22 in 1973, again by a margin of 7 to 2, the highest court in our land decided that unborn babies had the same rights as slaves one hundred and fifty years ago. The rhetoric is the same today as it was then, “If you oppose abortion, don’t have one”… folks, I can’t let it go that easily. There is an innocent child suffering, someone is being affected, it isn’t just “personal” choice.
I know that there will soon come a day when the American people will speak as one against abortion and Roe vs. Wade will be overturned. Soon after that decision is made, the same question will be asked of you that was asked of people in the 1960′s; and your child or your grandchild will turn to you and ask, “Where were you in this great war (on the unborn)”? I pray that I can answer, “I did everything I could do to stop it”.
“Because of the violence done to the oppressed,
because of the painful cries of the needy,
I will spring into action,” says the Lord.
“I will provide the safety they so desperately desire”.
